Weddermann Architecture was approached to design an age-in-place home with a caretaker apartment above the garage. The client sought to create a custom living space to accommodate their shifting lifestyle. With a passion for their comfort and well-being, the clients envisioned a home that offered both functionality and stunning views, particularly of Mount Rainier.
To achieve this the Weddermann team utilized client-provided plans to serve as the foundational blueprint for the project. Adjustments were made to personalize the design and ensure it aligned with their preferences. Careful attention was paid to optimizing the layout and strategically positioning the living room to maximize the picturesque views.
A notable challenge arose during the initial site design phase when reliance on Google Maps proved to be imprecise for accurately locating the mountain and orienting the house. This prompted a hands-on approach, with the architect personally visiting the site with a 100' tape measure and compass to pinpoint the optimal position for the living room, ensuring an unobstructed view of Mount Rainier.
Central to the design concept was the focus on accessibility and longevity, reflecting the clients' desire to age in place comfortably. Accordingly, the home was meticulously crafted to be wheelchair accessible, aside from the caretaker suite above the garage. By prioritizing functionality, aesthetics, and the client's specific needs, the age-in-place home with its caretaker apartment embodies a harmonious blend of practicality and elegance tailored to the client's lifestyle and preferences.
